RIUJ Meeting Discusses Honorary Membership, New Appointments, and Upcoming Workshops

Islamabad: The Rawalpindi Islamabad Union of Journalists (RIUJ) held a meeting at the Rawalpindi Press Club. President Tariq Ali Virk chaired the session. Key attendees included Acting Secretary Gulzar Khan, Senior Vice President Raja Bashir Usmani, Joint Secretary Mujahid Naqvi, and Governing Body members Ali Akhtar, Afshan Qureshi, and Ghufran Chishti.

Honorary Membership Decision

The RIUJ decided to grant honorary membership to individuals from Rawalpindi and Islamabad who have made significant contributions to journalism. This initiative aims to honor their legacy and keep their names alive in journalistic circles.

Scrutiny of Voter Lists and New Memberships

The meeting also addressed the scrutiny of the RIUJ voter list. A committee will be formed to expedite this process. Additionally, the RIUJ will start accepting new memberships. Officials must submit names for Unit Chief and Deputy Chief positions within a week. RIUJ will then notify these appointments.

Support for Jang Newspaper Workers

The RIUJ strongly condemned the Jang administration’s treatment of its employees. The union expressed unwavering support for the workers. They warned the Jang administration to cease any actions against the workers or face the union’s solidarity.

Concerns Over Police Conduct

The meeting voiced serious concerns about the police’s biased role in the Jang newspaper case. The RIUJ called on the Prime Minister, the Federal Interior Minister, the Chief Minister of Punjab, and the Federal and Provincial Information and Broadcasting Ministers to take immediate action.

Upcoming Workshops

Plans for organizing workshops for the journalist community were finalized. The first workshop on social and digital media is scheduled for this week.

Preparations for BDM Event

Extensive discussions were held about the BDM event in Islamabad in November 2024. The RIUJ pledged to take all necessary steps to ensure excellent hospitality for this national-level program. RIUJ Secretary Asif Bashir Chaudhry joined online from London. He appreciated the union officials’ efforts and extended his best wishes.
