LAHORE – The Punjab government is likely to extend summer vacations in schools as widespread flooding continues to disrupt daily life across several districts.
Chief Secretary Zahid Akhtar Zaman chaired a meeting at the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) committee room on Thursday to review the evolving flood situation and precautionary measures.
Schools in the province are officially scheduled to reopen on September 1, but officials said a one-week extension is under consideration. The delay would allow authorities to prioritize relief operations, as many school buildings are currently being used as shelters for displaced families.
Punjab Education Minister Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed that schools in flood-hit areas have opened their doors to provide refuge for affected communities. “The safety of students remains our foremost concern,” he said, stressing that academic activities would only resume once conditions stabilize.
Authorities added that a final decision will be announced soon, depending on the ground situation in flood-affected districts.
