Pakistan and US getting closer to a trade deal, say finance officials

Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb and US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick met virtually on June 24 to push forward trade talks — and it looks like things are heading in the right direction.

The two sides agreed that progress has been solid so far and seemed hopeful that the negotiations — especially those focused on tariffs — will wrap up by next week. But it doesn’t stop there. They also hinted at building a broader partnership in the future, one that could cover strategic cooperation and investment opportunities on both sides.

The key focus of the conversation was to strengthen trade and economic ties in a way that benefits both countries. Technical teams are expected to finalize the finer details of the deal soon.

All in all, both leaders sounded upbeat about getting a deal done sooner rather than later.
