The Punjab government’s decision to extend school summer holidays has landed in court after a student filed a petition against it.
The Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench admitted the petition on Monday, with Justice Jawadul Hassan hearing the case. Notices were issued to the Punjab education secretary and other concerned authorities.
The petitioner, student Danial, argued through his lawyer Hafiz Waqar Ahmad Awan that closing schools for such a long period was unjustified. “Children are losing valuable learning time—this is equal to playing with their future,” the counsel said.
Justice Hassan openly criticized the decision, remarking: “Courts have remained open even during wars. What is this trend of closing schools for summer and then for fog?”
He underlined that education is a basic right of every child and cannot be compromised. The judge further highlighted that parents pay substantial fees with the expectation of regular and uninterrupted education.
The case will proceed once the government files its official reply to the notices.
