Google has officially denied rumors suggesting the discontinuation of Fitbit smartwatches, including the popular Fitbit Sense and Fitbit Versa product lines. In a statement to Ars Technica, a Google spokesperson clarified that the company has no current plans to phase out these devices.
The clarification follows a TechRadar article, dramatically titled “RIP Fitbit smartwatches—an end we could see coming a mile away,” which speculated about the future of Fitbit devices after the announcement of the Google Pixel Watch 3. The article suggested that the launch of the Pixel Watch 3, which includes features like free access to the Daily Readiness Score (previously exclusive to Fitbit Premium subscribers) and six months of complimentary Fitbit Premium service, indicated a potential shift away from Fitbit’s smartwatch offerings.
Further fueling speculation, Engadget reported that Sandeep Waraich, senior director of product management for Pixel Wearables, implied that future Fitbit products might focus more on minimalistic fitness trackers rather than full-featured smartwatches. However, Google has countered these claims, emphasizing its ongoing commitment to the Fitbit brand and its customers.
In response, Google highlighted the continued innovation and new product launches within the Fitbit line, such as the recent introduction of the Fitbit Ace LTE, a smartwatch designed for kids. Google affirmed that Fitbit’s health and fitness features have significantly contributed to the development of the Pixel Watch 3, and reassured users that they can expect more from Fitbit in the future.
