G-B CM says Rs 4bn relief package falls short as fresh floods worsen damage

GILGIT – Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan has said the Rs4 billion relief package announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is no longer adequate, as fresh floods have caused widespread destruction across the region.

Speaking at a ceremony where compensation cheques were distributed among the families of flood victims, the chief minister expressed gratitude for the prime minister’s earlier visit and support but stressed that the situation has since deteriorated.

“The prime minister’s support is commendable, and we are thankful for the Rs4 billion package,” Khan said. “But after his visit, more floods hit our villages, destroying homes, bridges, and livelihoods. The losses now far exceed the announced assistance.”

The ceremony was attended by Federal Minister for Kashmir Affairs and G-B Engineer Amir Muqam, along with provincial cabinet members. Families of those who lost their lives in the floods received compensation cheques under the government’s relief measures.

Earlier in the day, Muqam visited remote flood-hit valleys on foot to meet victims directly. He reaffirmed the government’s solidarity with the people of Gilgit-Baltistan and assured that additional aid would be mobilised to address the growing devastation.
