Free electric bikes for top students as Pakistan accelerates toward a greener future

In a move that blends rewarding education with clean energy innovation, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced that high-performing students across Pakistan will receive free electric bikes.

The decision came after a meeting on the nationwide electric vehicle (EV) promotion plan, where the premier described the initiative as a symbol of both academic recognition and environmental responsibility.

“We want to honor students’ dedication while making eco-friendly transport a reality for our youth,” Shehbaz Sharif said.

More than just free bikes

This isn’t just about rewarding students. The plan includes distributing 100,000 electric bikes and 300,000 electric loaders to promote clean mobility and green jobs. While top scorers will get bikes at no cost, economically disadvantaged groups will benefit from subsidized e-rickshaws and loaders, helping them earn a livelihood while reducing fuel imports.

A special financing scheme is also in the works, allowing the wider population to purchase EVs through affordable, subsidized loans.

Inclusivity at the core

The scheme has a strong gender and regional inclusion focus. One-fourth of the total quota will go to women, encouraging their mobility and independence. Additionally, Balochistan will receive 10% of the share, ensuring smaller provinces aren’t left behind in the country’s EV transition.

Building the EV ecosystem

To support this shift, four new battery manufacturing plants will be set up in Pakistan, laying the groundwork for a self-sustaining EV industry and generating new employment opportunities.

Transparency and public outreach

The government promises transparent distribution with third-party validation and strict safety standards for all vehicles. A nationwide awareness campaign will soon guide students and citizens on how to benefit from the scheme.

The meeting also saw participation from key ministers, including Ahad Khan Cheema and Attaullah Tarar, as well as senior aides like Haroon Akhtar and Mosharraf Zaidi.

This initiative reflects the government’s broader vision—empowering youth, fostering innovation, and creating a cleaner, more sustainable future for Pakistan.
