Lionel Messi has been announced as Time’s Athlete of the Year for the year 2023.

Time magazine has awarded Argentina’s captain, Lionel Messi, the title of Athlete of the Year for 2023, following his historic eighth Ballon d’Or win and his impact on boosting soccer’s prominence in the United States due to his transfer to Inter Miami.

Messi played a pivotal role in leading Argentina to their first World Cup victory in 36 years by defeating defending champions France in last December’s final.

Upon leaving Paris St Germain earlier this year, the 36-year-old had multiple enticing offers, opting to join Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami despite interest from his former team Barcelona and a lucrative offer from Saudi side Al-Hilal.

“I had several appealing options and had to carefully evaluate them, even discussing them with my family, before ultimately deciding to come to Miami,” Messi explained to Time.

Upon arriving in Miami, Messi made an immediate impact, scoring 10 goals in seven Leagues Cup appearances, propelling the team to victory in the tournament involving MLS and Mexican teams.

His presence in the US not only influenced the game but also caused a surge in searches for match dates and ticket purchases to witness his performances, including a high demand for his official pink Inter Miami jersey.

Ticket prices for Inter Miami matches surged, and research firm Antenna reported a significant rise in Apple TV subscriptions, thanks to the 10-year partnership between Apple TV and MLS.

Time magazine noted, “Messi achieved what was once deemed unattainable: transforming the US into a soccer-centric nation.”

In recent years, athletes such as Simone Biles, LeBron James, and the United States women’s soccer team have received this accolade, with Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees being the recipient in 2022.
