A much-anticipated initiative to provide free electric scooters to female teachers has hit a roadblock, as no financial allocation was made for the project in the 2025–26 provincial budget. The delay has left many educators disappointed, questioning the government’s commitment to their welfare.
The School Education Department had previously announced plans to distribute scooters to women teachers across the province, with the goal of easing their commute and improving access to schools, especially in rural and far-flung areas. The promise was reaffirmed by the education minister earlier this year.
But as the new budget was unveiled, hopes were dashed when it became clear that the program had not been funded. Teachers who were counting on the promised support expressed deep frustration, pointing out that transportation remains one of their biggest daily challenges.
“This wasn’t just about convenience,” said one schoolteacher. “It was about safety, reliability, and dignity.”
Educators are now calling on the government to revisit its decision and make good on its pledge. They argue that providing scooters would not only ease daily hardship but also send a strong message of support for women in the education sector.
