Pakistan to start ferry service to UAE and Iran, offering cheaper travel from Karachi and Gwadar

For the first time in its history, Pakistan is set to launch international ferry services connecting the country with Iran and Gulf countries, including the UAE, offering affordable sea travel to thousands of Pakistanis.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs has issued the first-ever ferry operator license to Sea Keepers, a global maritime company that will operate from Karachi and Gwadar ports.

The decision came after a joint committee meeting that involved senior officials from multiple ministries, including Defense, Interior, Foreign Affairs, and Maritime Affairs, along with input from shipping and port authorities.

🧳 Travel Alternative for Pilgrims and Expats

The ferry service is expected to significantly benefit:

  • Zaireen (pilgrims) headed to Iran and Iraq

  • Workers and expatriates traveling to Gulf states

  • Tourists and families seeking a low-cost alternative to flights

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the license as a major milestone under the vision of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, adding:

“This will enhance trade, tourism, and people-to-people ties across the region while reducing travel costs.”

He said the ferry vessels would be modern, well-equipped, and capable of offering safe and comfortable journeys at much lower prices compared to air travel.

🌊 A Step Toward Developing Pakistan’s Blue Economy

The new ferry service supports the government’s wider blue economy strategy, which focuses on:

  • Sustainable maritime transport

  • Improved sea trade logistics

  • Boosting tourism and port activity

Further expansion of ferry routes is expected based on demand patterns and bilateral maritime agreements.

This initiative is also expected to ease congestion at airports and land borders, offering a cost-effective, sea-based option for travelers and regional cargo movement.
