Veteran journalist Alamgir Mohiuddin, founding editor of Naya Diganta, passes away at 83

Alamgir Mohiuddin, 83, founding editor of renowned Bangladeshi daily, ‘The Naya Diganta’ had been passed away. He left his last breathe at Anwar Khan Modern Hospital in Dhaka on saturday, August 23 around local time 01:30 pm.
He was burried at capital’s Rayerbazar Graveyard after the Janaza prayer held at Farmgate’s Manipuripara Krishi Laboratories Mosque on saturday night.
Earlier, ensuring about his death Ayub Bhuiyan, General Secretary of National Press Club of Bangladesh said, “Alamgir Mohiuddin fell sick at his own home last week. Since then, he was admitted to the hospital.”
According to his family members, After falling sick suddenly, Mohiuddin was admitted to Anwar Khan Modern Hospital situated at Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area on May 30. Then, within a few days as condition of his health improved slightly, he was brought back to home. But, he fell sick on last week again and was admitted to the hospital. There he passed away on saturday. He became disable to speak and move also, said the family members.
The doctors told that he was suffering from mineral inconsistencies, alongside facing complexities in urination, respiration, and unstable blood pressure. “The presence of mineral components like Sodium, Chlorine, Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium was also unstable”, mentioned the doctors.
On his death, Mia Golam Parwar, Secretary General of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami said, “Alamgir Mohiuddin played a crucial role to present news with fairness.” He added, “He (Mohiuddin) struggled to establish democracy, freedom of speech, and human rights through his whole life. On his departure, we felt deeply mourned and acknowledged our condolences for his family members and well-wishers”, said the Jamaat Secretary.
The old journalist, Alamgir Mohiuddin was born in Natore, a northern district of Bangladesh on March 1, 1942. He completed his secondary education from Chanchakair Nazimuddin High School. Then, studied in higher secondary at Rajshahi College. Later, he obtained Honors degree on English from Rajshahi University. In personal life, he had two daughters, among them the elder one lives in Canada. His wife also passed away four years ago.
Mohiuddin was the founding editor of renowned Bangladeshi daily, ‘The Naya Diganta’ since 2004, operated under the Diganta Media Corporation Ltd., established by former Jamaat leader Mir Quasem Ali. Earlier, he edited an English daily, ‘The New Nation’ and worked as news editor at ‘Bangladesh Times’. He was also a Directory Board Member of the state-owned news agency, ‘Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha’ (BSS).
During the Awami regime in Bangladesh, he and his newspaper ‘Naya Diganta’ became a victim to suppression by the government. After the death of this senior journalist, the shadow of deep mourning had covered the media universe of Bangladesh.
