Sindh rains cripple telecom services as 2,500 towers go offline, Karachi worst hit

Heavy downpours across Sindh, especially Karachi, wreaked havoc on telecommunications, disrupting mobile and internet services for thousands of users. Officials at the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reported that over 2,500 towers went offline during the storm.

Despite the widespread damage, PTA teams managed to restore 1,800 towers within 24 hours, bringing relief to most parts of Karachi. Mobile and internet connectivity in several districts has already been normalized, though recovery work continues.

The outages stemmed from power breakdowns and equipment damage triggered by flooding and lightning. PTA has urged local authorities to ensure uninterrupted power supply to tower sites, calling it crucial for maintaining digital connectivity during emergencies.

“Restoration work is ongoing, and service across Sindh will be fully functional soon,” PTA sources said, stressing that coordination with local administrations is ongoing to expedite the process.

The incident underscores the urgent need for climate-resilient telecom infrastructure in Pakistan, as extreme weather increasingly impacts vital services.
