Punjab finalizes payment structure for Pakistan’s first electric taxi service

Lahore – Punjab is set to launch Pakistan’s first electric taxi service, with the provincial government finalizing the financing structure of the project. The initiative, already approved earlier this year, now comes with detailed subsidies, loan facilities, and operational plans.

According to the working paper, 1,100 electric taxis will hit Lahore’s roads in the initial phase. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a financing model under which banks will provide up to Rs. 6.5 million in loans for electric vehicles.

The Punjab government will bear the full interest cost, while buyers will make a subsidized down payment. For vehicles priced between Rs. 4 million and Rs. 10 million, the government will contribute Rs. 585,000 towards the down payment, with banks financing the rest.

Officials confirmed that Rs. 2 billion has been allocated for the scheme, which will rely on 1,100 imported Chinese EVs in its starting phase. To ensure smooth operations, 18 charging stations have already been set up in Lahore, with expansion plans underway.

Authorities believe the electric taxi project will cut transport costs, reduce air pollution, and transform urban mobility in Punjab.
