PFA shuts down Lahore bakery sections for expired products and poor hygiene, fines imposed

In a recent enforcement drive, the Punjab Food Authority (PFA) sealed a warehouse, jam unit, and two sections of a renowned bakery in Lahore’s Kahna and Multan Road areas. The action included imposing fines of Rs. 2.7 million on four operators for violating food safety laws.

Led by Director General M Asim Javaid, PFA teams discovered and destroyed 44,000 litres of expired soybean oil, 30,000 kilograms of fungus-contaminated pickles and preserves, 400 kilograms of expired flavorings, and over 3,300 kilograms of chemicals. The bakery’s cake-making section and cold storage were shut down due to the use of expired ingredients and poor sanitation.

Investigations revealed that one unit was preparing pickles and jams from spoiled fruits and vegetables, while another was caught selling expired and low-quality products in misleading packaging. The violations were flagged after inspectors encountered strong foul smells and unhygienic conditions at the premises.

The PFA chief warned that consuming adulterated or expired food products can result in serious health issues such as stomach and intestinal diseases. He reassured the public that PFA will continue rigorous and surprise inspections across the province to safeguard public health. People are urged to report any suspicious food practices by dialing the PFA helpline, 1223.
