PepsiCo & WaterAid Celebrate 3-Year Urban Water Milestone Bringing Clean Water to Thousands
KARACHI – After three years of dedicated work, WaterAid Pakistan and PepsiCo Foundation have successfully completed the Urban Water Initiative, a transformative project that improved access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services in Karachi, Peshawar, and Quetta.
Launched in 2022, the project tackled urban water challenges by installing filtration plants, running hygiene awareness campaigns, and forming community-led Water User Committees to keep the services sustainable. It directly benefited tens of thousands of people in underserved areas, schools, and health facilities.
Clean Water: A Basic Right
Speaking at the learning and closing event in Karachi, Sindh’s Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah said:
“Clean water and sanitation are fundamental to health, education, and dignity. We must hold ourselves accountable and build inclusive, climate-resilient systems for all.”
Public-Private Partnerships Creating Impact
WaterAid Pakistan’s Country Director Mian Muhammad Junaid highlighted the power of partnerships between communities, governments, and the private sector, stressing that the project not only delivered infrastructure but also empowered local communities for long-term management.
Hatim Khan from PepsiCo Foundation said the initiative reflects the Foundation’s global commitment to improving access to safe water and fostering community-driven, sustainable solutions in water-stressed areas.
A Dialogue on Sustainable WASH
A high-level panel discussion, featuring experts from PepsiCo Pakistan, IDEA, DevCon, Taraqee Foundation, and Mojaz Foundation, focused on lessons learned, inclusive design, and future pathways for scaling up sustainable WASH services.
The event concluded with participants reaffirming their commitment to achieving SDG 6 (Clean Water & Sanitation for All), ensuring that urban communities in Pakistan have lasting access to safe water and hygiene services.
