ISLAMABAD: In a landmark moment for regional environmental diplomacy, Pakistan’s Sustainable Development Policy Institute (SDPI) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) signed a seven-year Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) focused on climate resilience, research, and policy engagement in the Hindu Kush Himalayan (HKH) region.
Signed by Dr. Abid Qaiyum Suleri (SDPI) and Dr. Pema Gyamtsho (ICIMOD), the MoU reflects growing recognition of climate change as a unifying force amid geopolitical challenges.
“It is an honour to serve this region,” said Dr. Gyamtsho. “Let’s not hide behind conflict. Environmental challenges demand unified action.”
Dr. Gyamtsho praised Pakistan’s climate leadership and emphasized empowering regional scientists to tackle the worsening climate crisis collaboratively.
The event also honoured Khurram Dastgir Khan, Romina Khurshid Alam, and Dr. Suleri with commemorative souvenirs for their contributions to climate dialogue and diplomacy.
Romina Alam echoed the urgency:
“Post-COP29, the message is clear—climate change won’t wait. We must think regionally and act locally.”
Former minister Khurram Dastgir recalled the importance of Track-II diplomacy, especially where climate issues brought Pakistan and India closer.
“Climate and glacier melt were points of consensus. Let’s build peace through environmental dialogue,” he said.
The MoU’s Vision Includes:
-
Joint evidence-based research on climate risks, youth displacement, pollution, and urban expansion
-
Developing and promoting climate-resilient models for agriculture, tourism, energy, and water
-
Building cross-border learning platforms among lawmakers and experts in the HKH
-
Amplifying mountain voices at global forums like COP and UNFCCC
This collaboration is a step toward inclusive climate governance, proving that peace can begin with shared environmental stewardship.
