Pakistan Signs Historic UN Agreement to Safeguard Oceans Beyond Borders

Pakistan has become a signatory to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea’s BBNJ Agreement, a global framework designed to protect and sustainably use marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdictions.

Deputy PM and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar signed the pact at the UN Headquarters in New York. The Foreign Office said Pakistan had taken a leading role during negotiations, representing developing nations through the Group of 77 and China in 2022.

The agreement targets key issues, including fair benefit-sharing of marine genetic resources, establishing marine protected areas, conducting environmental impact assessments, and boosting capacity-building and technology transfer.

It also introduces a funding mechanism, a Conference of the Parties, and a secretariat to monitor progress.

By signing this agreement, Pakistan reaffirms its dedication to global ocean governance and long-term biodiversity conservation.
