Pakistan Railways to offer free Wi-Fi at 40 Punjab stations in digital upgrade

Passengers at 40 railway stations across Punjab will soon enjoy free Wi-Fi, as the federal government moves to modernize Pakistan Railways and improve public amenities.

Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi confirmed the plan during a televised interview, describing it as part of a larger Rs350 billion upgrade for the rail network.

The government’s massive investment will focus on revamping eight key branch routes in Punjab, with free internet access serving as an immediate improvement for passengers—especially those on long-haul routes or waiting at busy transit points.

“This is just the beginning of Pakistan Railways’ transformation,” Abbasi stated, highlighting the effort to digitize services and enhance the passenger experience.

Talks are also ongoing with the Sindh government to replicate similar projects on that side of the country, as the push for nationwide rail modernization gains momentum.

Abbasi reiterated the strategic value of larger projects like Main Line-1 (ML-1) and Main Line-2 (ML-2), which are expected to revolutionize freight and passenger transport once operational.

The introduction of free Wi-Fi is being seen as a symbolic but meaningful step toward a smarter, more connected Pakistan Railways.
