Pakistan invites Chinese investment in electric vehicles ahead of major business summit

Pakistan is actively seeking Chinese investment in electric vehicles, as Federal Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the growing role of EVs in bilateral cooperation during a press conference at the Pakistani Embassy in Beijing.

Iqbal said Pakistan is eager to collaborate with China in the areas of battery technology, EV assembly, and green transport, particularly as part of its shift toward a clean energy economy.

“We want to benefit from China’s EV expertise, especially in next-gen batteries like sodium-ion, which offer promising alternatives to lithium,” Iqbal told reporters.

The Minister highlighted the upcoming Pakistan-China Business Conference on September 4, where over 250 Pakistani firms and 200+ Chinese companies will gather for sectoral matchmaking—with a strong focus on EVs, solar energy, chemicals, and agriculture.

He said establishing EV production facilities in Pakistan would give Chinese firms a competitive edge, while helping Pakistan reduce fossil fuel imports and create high-quality jobs.

🚘 New EV Policy Targets Transformation

Under the National Electric Vehicle Policy 2025–2030, Pakistan plans to:

  • Ensure 30% of all new vehicle sales are electric by 2030

  • Achieve net-zero transport emissions by 2060

  • Promote local EV manufacturing, with tax breaks, subsidies, and infrastructure incentives

Several leading Chinese automakers like BYD and Chery are already involved in EV assembly and infrastructure projects across Pakistan, paving the way for the country to become a regional EV production hub.

Ahsan Iqbal called the EV transition a win-win opportunity that not only strengthens economic ties with China but also accelerates Pakistan’s green growth agenda.
