Pakistan and Ethiopia have agreed to strengthen parliamentary cooperation and expand bilateral ties in key sectors including trade, investment, aviation, science & technology, and climate change.
The agreement came during a meeting between Ethiopian Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula and Chairman Senate Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani in Islamabad on Friday.
Both sides held extensive discussions on enhancing bilateral relations and fostering multilateral cooperation for global peace and security.
Ambassador Dr. Jemal praised Pakistan’s role in promoting international peace and expressed Ethiopia’s keen interest in establishing a strategic partnership with Islamabad. He also highlighted joint efforts under Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Initiative and Pakistan’s Green Pakistan program, emphasizing the growing environmental collaboration between the two nations.
The Ethiopian envoy shared that his country’s Green Legacy Initiative, led by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, had successfully planted over 40.5 billion seedlings in six years, increasing Ethiopia’s green cover to 23.6%.
He further noted that bilateral ties had gained new momentum with the opening of the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad, the launch of Ethiopian Airlines’ Karachi flights, and increasing exchanges in trade, health, education, tourism, and culture.
Chairman Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani appreciated Ethiopia’s environmental efforts and welcomed direct flights between Karachi and Addis Ababa, calling for greater collaboration in the aviation sector.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to stronger economic and parliamentary ties with Ethiopia, Gilani invited the Ethiopian Parliament Speaker to the Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference scheduled in Pakistan this November.
