The Public Accounts Committee’s (PAC) subcommittee has uncovered serious mismanagement in the Prime Minister’s Laptop Scheme (Phase-II), reporting that over 1,000 laptops are missing.
According to the audit report, 1,011 laptops could not be traced. Of these, 784 have been recovered, but 227 remain missing — a shortfall that has caused financial losses of nearly Rs. 12 million. Officials further disclosed that, despite the irregularity, no action has been taken so far against those responsible.
HEC clarifies figures
The Higher Education Commission (HEC) responded by noting earlier discrepancies reported in 179 laptops. After a detailed check, this number has been revised to 143, though inquiries are still ongoing in Karachi and Bahawalpur’s Government Sadiq College Women’s University.
The PAC has ordered authorities to recover the missing laptops within one month. It also warned that if devices are not found, the cost will be recovered from those found negligent.
