Ethiopian delegation plants ‘fraternity trees’ in Islamabad to support Pakistan’s climate fight

Islamabad’s Fatima Jinnah Park became the center of a symbolic climate partnership as the Capital Development Authority (CDA) welcomed a delegation from Ethiopia to launch the ‘Plant Fraternity’ initiative in Pakistan.

The programme, organized jointly by the Ethiopian Embassy, CDA, and the Human Resource Development Network (HRDN), saw enthusiastic participation from youth and community members. The plantation drive symbolizes Ethiopia’s commitment to support Pakistan in its climate resilience efforts.

The Ethiopian Ambassador said that while Pakistan contributes minimally to global carbon emissions, it faces severe climate impacts. He added that the initiative is a gift from Ethiopia, aimed at sharing lessons from the Green Legacy Initiative, under which Ethiopia has planted over 41 billion trees in six years.

“This initiative reflects our friendship with Pakistan and our shared responsibility to combat climate change,” the Ambassador said.

CDA’s Director General Environment, Awais Tarar, lauded the Ethiopian Embassy’s efforts, highlighting CDA’s ongoing afforestation drives in Islamabad. Meanwhile, HRDN’s CEO Robeela Bangash called on youth to play a decisive role in environmental protection and climate action.

The initiative underscores how environmental diplomacy can foster stronger bilateral ties, with Pakistan and Ethiopia joining hands for a greener future.
