Early dengue outbreak hits Rawalpindi: 24 cases reported, crackdown on negligent staff begins

RAWALPINDI: The city is witnessing an early dengue outbreak, with 24 confirmed cases reported during monsoon rains, weeks ahead of the official dengue season. The sudden spike has alarmed both the district administration and health department.

To counter the situation, Rawalpindi has been divided into five administrative zones, seven sectors, and 32 cluster centres, each led by designated officers for focused surveillance and response.

Deputy Commissioner Hasan Waqar Cheema, during an emergency meeting, expressed serious concern over the outbreak and launched a stern crackdown. He ordered disciplinary action under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline and Accountability (PEEDA) Act for all negligent health workers.

Five DDHOs and 17 anti-dengue staff from affected areas have received show-cause notices due to failure in preventive duties.

The DC made it clear that false reporting, absenteeism, and leave without permission will not be tolerated. Officials found violating protocols will face immediate disciplinary action.

High-risk areas from previous years have been placed under daily inspection, and strict monitoring of dengue hotspots like tire shops, junkyards, and construction sites is underway. Locations where dengue larvae are found will be immediately sealed.

Furthermore, third-party audits and field inspections will support enforcement. Detection of larvae will lead to direct action against staff, and only the DC office will have the authority to de-seal premises.

This swift response aims to prevent a widespread outbreak as Rawalpindi braces for peak dengue season.
