Dhaka proposes direct flights, shipping services with Pakistan to expand bilateral trade
Dhaka/Chittagong: Bangladesh has proposed resuming direct flights and introducing regular shipping services with Pakistan to deepen economic ties and enhance regional trade connectivity.
The proposal was raised during a meeting between Pakistan’s Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, Bangladesh’s Adviser for Commerce Bashiruddin, and business leaders in Chittagong. The visit included consultations with the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a field tour of the local shipbreaking industry, and a briefing at Chittagong Port.
Business leaders emphasized the need for direct transport links to facilitate garments, agriculture, and other key exports. They also called for digitisation of trade processes and greater collaboration in new markets.
Both governments pledged to create a Joint Working Group on Trade to institutionalize dialogue and planning. They also explored trilateral trade opportunities for reaching Africa and Central Asia, while highlighting healthcare, leather, food, and essential commodities as priority sectors.
Minister Khan invited Bangladeshi businesses to attend the upcoming International Food and Agricultural Exhibition in Karachi (November 25–27, 2025), saying the platform will help expand partnerships.
The Pakistani and Bangladeshi delegations also discussed cooperation in shipbuilding, shipbreaking, and recycling during their visit to the Kabir Ship Recycling Facilities. A detailed presentation by the Chittagong Port Authority showcased ongoing port expansion and modernization projects.
