The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to introduce a state-of-the-art electric tram service in Islamabad, aiming to modernize the city’s public transport system.
In a meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, officials reviewed progress on the tram feasibility report, which will determine the financial and operational models for the project. The trams will feature multiple compartments, be accessible for differently-abled individuals and women, and operate along high-traffic routes.
The CDA chief emphasized that the tram system must be financially sustainable, urging officials to explore public-private partnerships and revenue-generating options such as digital advertising screens, smart ticketing systems, and in-bus ads.
Islamabad’s electric bus network already caters to 90,000 passengers daily, offering eco-friendly, affordable transport. Building on this success, the tram project will further enhance connectivity, reduce pollution, and ease congestion in the capital.
Other planned upgrades include:
-
140 bus stops being revamped with modern facilities
-
200+ new stops featuring digital boards
-
Electric feeder buses aligned with passenger demand
-
Improved terminals with real-time schedules and safety alerts
Randhawa said these initiatives will transform Islamabad into a green, efficient, and commuter-friendly city, urging residents to support the transition to sustainable transport solutions.
