Ethiopia and Pakistan Agree to Expand Agricultural Cooperation Trade Investment and Technology Transfer

Ethiopia and Pakistan have agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation in agriculture with a focus on increasing trade and investment, promoting technology transfer, improving food security and advancing livestock development.

The agreement was reached during a meeting in Islamabad between Ethiopian Ambassador Dr Oumer Hussien Oba and Pakistan Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain.

The two sides discussed several opportunities to expand agricultural collaboration, including the proposed development of an agro pact that could institutionalize cooperation and facilitate the exchange of knowledge, expertise and technology between agricultural institutions in both countries.

Ambassador Oumer highlighted the importance of agriculture to Ethiopia’s economy and outlined the governments commitment to developing the sector. He also presented Ethiopias Green Legacy Initiative, which promotes sustainable development through agricultural growth, food security, climate resilience and the expansion of a green economy.

The Ethiopian ambassador said his country could share its experience under the Green Legacy Initiative with Pakistan. He also encouraged Pakistani agricultural entrepreneurs and investors to explore opportunities in Ethiopias growing agriculture sector.

During the meeting, Ambassador Oumer also briefed the Pakistani minister on Ethiopias preparations to host COP32 in Addis Ababa in 2027.

Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted Pakistans capabilities in agricultural research, modern farming technologies, agricultural machinery, irrigation, livestock development and agro processing. He expressed Pakistans willingness to share technical expertise and experience with Ethiopia.

The Pakistani minister said both countries have significant potential to expand cooperation in crop productivity, seed development, climate resilient agriculture and farm mechanization.

The proposed cooperation could create new opportunities for agricultural investment, knowledge sharing and technology exchange while supporting food security and sustainable agricultural development in both countries.
