KARACHI – At least seven people were killed on Tuesday as relentless monsoon rains battered Karachi, submerging roads, cutting power, and forcing authorities to declare a rain emergency.
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed Saadi Town recorded the highest rainfall at 176 mm, while other areas such as Gulshan-e-Hadeed (173 mm), Nazimabad (175.6 mm), and Jinnah Terminal (152.8 mm) also witnessed heavy showers.
Floodwaters entered homes in Gulshan-e-Hadeed, while waterlogging at Hassan Square, Liaquatabad, Korangi, and Malir Expressway brought traffic to a halt. Long tailbacks were reported across Shahrah-e-Faisal, University Road, and II Chundrigar Road.
Rescue agencies confirmed multiple deaths in rain-related accidents. An eight-year-old boy died in Orangi Town after a wall collapse, while four family members perished in Gulistan-e-Jauhar’s Block 12 under similar circumstances.
Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori briefed Deputy PM Ishaq Dar about the city’s worsening conditions, urging federal support. Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah ordered strict monitoring of drains and mobilization of rescue teams, while Senior Minister Sharjeel Memon appealed to citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rains.
Traffic Police set up emergency response units and helplines to guide commuters as slippery roads and stranded vehicles added to the chaos.
The PMD warned of continued rainfall in Karachi, advising residents of flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.
