Punjab on high alert as pdma warns of new monsoon rains and possible flooding from August 13

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has warned that a fresh spell of monsoon rains will hit the province from August 13, potentially causing flooding in major rivers and adjoining areas.

Advisories have been issued for the Sutlej, Ravi, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers, along with nearby streams and nullahs. Rising water levels are expected during what will be the seventh spell of the monsoon season.

All commissioners, deputy commissioners, and relevant departments — including local government, agriculture, irrigation, health, forests, livestock, and transport — have been instructed to stay on high alert.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasized completing all preparations in advance and ensuring that emergency control rooms remain staffed 24/7. Rescue 1122’s disaster response teams have also been ordered to stay ready for any eventuality.

Authorities are urging residents to follow safety instructions, evacuate livestock and belongings from riverbeds, and avoid swimming in rivers and canals. In case of emergencies, citizens can call the PDMA helpline 1129.
