Wateen Telecom receives 20-year renewal of LDI license from PTA, reinforcing Pakistan’s digital backbone
Wateen Telecom Limited has secured a major milestone, as the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) renewed the company’s Long Distance International (LDI) License for another 20 years. The signing ceremony took place in Islamabad on November 6, 2025, with senior officials from both PTA and Wateen in attendance. The renewal is seen as a strong vote of confidence in Wateen’s operational performance and long-term role in Pakistan’s digital growth.
Over the past year, Wateen and PTA worked together to resolve the long-standing Access Promotion Contribution (APC) matter linked with the Universal Service Fund (USF). The issue was formally settled through a Sindh High Court order issued on October 22, 2025, which was backed by both the PTA and the Ministry of IT and Telecom. The resolution helped clear the path for the smooth renewal of the LDI license.
Wateen considers the license one of its most critical strategic assets, enabling the company to expand long-haul optical fiber infrastructure and manage nationwide IP and voice traffic. With its expanding fiber network, Wateen continues to serve as a key player supporting Pakistan’s connectivity ecosystem and preparing the groundwork for emerging technologies, including the anticipated 5G rollout.
Wateen Telecom CEO Adil Rashid said the renewal highlights the company’s consistent compliance and contribution to the country’s digital landscape. “This 20-year extension reflects our commitment to strengthening Pakistan’s connectivity backbone and supporting national 5G readiness through robust fiber infrastructure. Wateen will continue empowering CMOs, enterprises, and public institutions as they move through their digital transformation journeys,” he stated.
Industry observers note that the renewal places Wateen ahead of several other LDI operators that are still entangled in APC-related disputes and awaiting license extensions. By proactively addressing regulatory matters, Wateen has reinforced its position as a reliable and forward-looking leader supporting next-generation digital infrastructure and national connectivity goals.
