Qatar Eyes 2036 Olympics, Enters Talks with IOC on Hosting Bid

Qatar is in talks with the International Olympic Committee (IOC) over the 2036 Summer Olympics, adding its name to the list of potential host countries.

The Qatar Olympic Committee confirmed that the nation already has nearly all the needed sports venues, with plans to reach 100% readiness. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al-Thani highlighted that the bid aligns with Qatar’s long-term vision for a sustainable sports legacy.

If awarded the Games, Qatar would make history as the first Middle Eastern country to host the Olympics. Doha, which previously hosted the Asian Games in 2006 and will do so again in 2030, has gained extensive experience from organizing major events like the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Other confirmed or rumored bidders include Indonesia, Turkiye, India, Chile, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, and several European nations. The IOC’s new president Kirsty Coventry will oversee the selection, with the Games likely to rotate to Asia or Africa after Europe, North America, and Oceania host 2024, 2028, and 2032 respectively.
