PDMA warns Punjab of heavy rains and flash flood risk in next 24 hours

The Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has issued a fresh flood fact sheet, warning of heavy rains and possible flash floods across the province in the next 24 hours.

According to the report, rainfall was recorded in Murree, Rawalpindi, Sialkot, and Bahawalpur over the past day, while districts in upper Punjab face the risk of torrential rains and sudden cloudbursts.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has directed all district administrations, especially in vulnerable regions, to remain on high alert and ensure timely precautionary measures.

The flood update also highlighted the situation of major rivers. The Indus River is experiencing low-level flooding at Tarbela and Taunsa and medium-level flooding at Kalabagh and Chashma. The Sutlej River is at low flood at Ganda Singh Wala, while the Chenab, Jhelum, and Ravi remain at normal flow.

Reservoir levels are rising, with Tarbela Dam now 98% full and Mangla Dam at 68% capacity. Across the border, Indian dams have reached 70% storage, the PDMA added.

Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant during the rainy season. People are advised not to let children play near rivers, streams, and low-lying areas and to strictly follow safety guidelines.

So far, no loss of life or property has been reported in Punjab in the last 24 hours.

Meanwhile, in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, flash floods have already claimed 307 lives within two days, underscoring the urgent need for precaution in Punjab.
