Pakistan Idol comeback announced with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Fawad Khan on judging panel

Eleven years after its first season, Pakistan Idol is set to make a much-anticipated return to Pakistani television. The upcoming season will feature an all-new judging lineup, including Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, Bilal Maqsood, Zeb Bangash, and Fawad Khan, promising a fresh yet star-powered revival of the hit franchise.

The show, adapted from the British format Pop Idol, originally aired in 2014 on Geo TV and became an instant sensation. Judges at the time included Ali Azmat, Bushra Ansari, and Hadiqa Kiani, with Lahore’s Zamad Baig crowned the winner.

For many, the show was more than a competition — it was a gateway into the music industry. “You are musically groomed when you go to this show,” recalled Season One contestant Waqas Ali Vicky. Finalist Rose Marie described it as “a stage where the entire nation can see you and appreciate you,” saying it gave her career the boost she needed.

Contestants also benefited from mentorship and exposure to different music styles. “All of us were raw talent,” Vicky shared. “We learned how to present ourselves, dress for performances, and collaborate with other musicians.” Rose Marie said her connections from the show led to work on drama OSTs, film tracks, and ad jingles.

Vicky, who did not come from a musical background, credited Pakistan Idol with giving him an identity as an artist. “People start to follow you from around the world, and it opens doors you didn’t know existed,” he said.

Zoya Merchant of MHL Global, which will stream the show across five networks, told Variety, “Pakistan has incredible musical talent, and this platform will elevate it to a global stage.”

Online auditions and casting calls will open soon, with the premiere date expected to be revealed shortly.
