Heavy rain batters Karachi again, flooding worsens and 8 dead in rain-related incidents

Fresh rain hit Karachi on Wednesday, worsening the already dire situation after Tuesday’s torrential downpour left large parts of the city submerged. The death toll from rain-related incidents has reached eight, while authorities brace for further showers this week.

Floodwater accumulated across major roads and underpasses, paralyzing traffic in many areas. Karachi Traffic Police reported closures at Shaheed-i-Millat Road, Drigh Road underpass, and Korangi Crossing, among others, urging commuters to call helpline 1915 for route assistance.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab said the administration was fully mobilized but stressed that climate change had intensified Karachi’s vulnerability, pointing out that Manghopir alone received 235mm of rain in just 12 hours. Sindh CM Murad Ali Shah inspected flooded areas, noting that nullahs were functional but the rain intensity had exceeded capacity.

Rescue workers recovered two more bodies, including a 50-year-old man from a nullah near Gurumandir and a motorcyclist who died of electrocution in DHA. Earlier, six others had lost their lives, including four members of a family killed when the walls of their Gulistan-i-Jauhar home collapsed.

Power supply has been partially restored in several localities, though outages continue across many neighborhoods. Meanwhile, the PMD has forecast more torrential rains in Karachi, Hyderabad, Tharparkar, and multiple districts of Sindh and Balochistan till August 22, warning of further urban flooding.
