Pakistani households could see reduced electricity bills as the government considers expanding the protected power tariff slab from 200 units to 300 units.
Lawmakers recently raised the issue with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, pointing out that consumers using 201 units were facing a sudden jump of around Rs. 5,000 in their monthly bills. They argued the sharp increase was unfair and hit low-usage households the hardest.
Under the proposed change, only consumers exceeding 300 units would face the higher tariff rates. The adjustment could bring relief to thousands of families struggling with escalating utility costs.
A government-appointed high-level committee is set to review the criteria for protected and non-protected electricity consumers and will recommend a revised structure to the prime minister.
The move comes as the government faces mounting pressure to address public discontent over energy prices and ease the financial burden on vulnerable households.
