Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue in Islamabad focuses on climate resilience and cooperation

Islamabad — On August 18, 2025, Pakistan and Ethiopia reaffirmed their commitment to climate resilience and sustainable development during the Ethiopia–Pakistan Green Dialogue hosted at the COMSTECH Secretariat. The event, themed “Lessons from Ethiopia’s Green Legacy”, was organized in collaboration with the Embassy of Ethiopia.

The program began with Quranic recitation, national anthems, and a video highlighting Ethiopia’s flagship Green Legacy campaign, widely recognized as one of the world’s most ambitious reforestation initiatives.

Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General COMSTECH, emphasized the role of green diplomacy in addressing shared global challenges, while Ethiopian Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula detailed Ethiopia’s achievements in mass tree planting and eco-friendly practices.

Chief Guest Senator Yusuf Raza Gillani, Chairman Senate of Pakistan, underlined Pakistan’s vulnerability to climate change despite its minimal contribution to global emissions. He praised Ethiopia’s Green Legacy as a global example and urged enhanced Pakistan–Ethiopia cooperation through joint task forces, research collaborations, and parliamentary dialogues.

Gillani also highlighted Pakistan’s international efforts, including its leadership at COP27 on the Loss and Damage Fund and active role at COP29 on climate finance.

The dialogue included Green Legacy Awards, a tree plantation ceremony, and a panel discussion where experts shared insights on policy frameworks, reforestation strategies, and sustainable community models.

The session concluded with a networking lunch, leaving participants optimistic about stronger bilateral collaboration in climate resilience, ecological restoration, and sustainable development.
