Developed World Must Act on Climate Finance, Says Pakistan at COP-29

Pakistan has called on the developed world to take urgent action on climate finance at COP-29, demanding deeper emission cuts and increased resilience funding for climate-vulnerable nations.

Climate Change Minister Dr. Musadik Malik delivered the message during bilateral meetings with COP-29 President Mukhtar Babayev and Lead Negotiator Yalchin Rafiyev on the sidelines of the COP Heads of Delegation Retreat in Shamakhi, Azerbaijan.

Malik stressed that while the Global South bears the brunt of climate disasters, the Global North remains the primary contributor to historical and ongoing greenhouse gas emissions.

“Pakistan’s location next to two of the world’s largest carbon emitters worsens its climate vulnerability. It is time for developed countries to fulfill their climate finance commitments and take the lead in emission reduction,” Malik said.

He highlighted that climate change is a transboundary challenge affecting populations beyond borders and called for strengthened global cooperation based on justice and science.

The two sides also discussed boosting green cooperation between Pakistan and Azerbaijan in renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, disaster risk reduction, and adaptation strategies. Malik expressed hope that COP-29 would deliver inclusive, science-based global climate solutions.
