Danger looms as mudslide lake in Gilgit-Baltistan threatens major flooding

Islamabad/Gilgit: A massive mudslide in Gilgit-Baltistan has created a 7-kilometre lake that officials fear could burst and cause “catastrophic” flooding across four districts.

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said the mudslide, which hit on Friday, blocked the Ghizer River completely, forming a natural dam. Officials warned that the pressure of the water could overwhelm the fragile barrier.

“This lake is a serious threat. If it bursts, it could unleash devastating floods downstream,” said PDMA Director General Zakir Hussain, identifying Ghizer, Gilgit, Astore, and Diamer as the most vulnerable districts.

The region is already grappling with record monsoon rains and cloudbursts that have claimed nearly 400 lives in the past week.

Eyewitnesses reported torrents of mud rushing from multiple mountainsides into the river. A shepherd, who was the first to spot the incoming flow, alerted villagers and authorities, enabling the safe evacuation of nearly 200 people from scattered riverside homes.

Provincial spokesperson Faizullah Faraq said the lake has begun discharging water, which has slightly eased the pressure. However, he warned that flash floods remain a risk until the river resumes its normal flow.

Authorities have urged downstream communities to stay vigilant, avoid low-lying riverbanks, and prepare for emergency evacuation.
