CDA plans complete overhaul of Faizabad Interchange for long-term traffic relief

Islamabad’s Faizabad Interchange will be completely redesigned instead of loop widening, as CDA aims for a 30-year traffic solution.

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has abandoned its earlier plan to widen the loops of Faizabad Interchange and will now pursue a full redesign and expansion of the entire interchange to provide a lasting fix for traffic congestion.

The move was finalised in a Friday meeting led by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa. Previously, the CDA had floated bids for a Rs. 200 million loop-widening project at the 1990s-era interchange — a critical link between Rawalpindi and Islamabad and a frequent site for protests.

Despite receiving bids, CDA officials concluded the plan was insufficient. “The chairman has directed us to work on a complete design that will serve for the next three decades,” CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza said.

Three consultancy firms are now preparing a comprehensive master plan. Once complete, it will be presented to Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who has urged the CDA to eliminate daily traffic jams, especially on the Murree Road–Islamabad Expressway loop.

The redesign project will be executed in multiple phases based on budget availability and final approvals.
