The Pakistan Army, in coordination with federal and provincial authorities, has intensified relief operations as monsoon floods wreak havoc across the country.
Briefing the media on Tuesday, DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said that under the Chief of Army Staff’s directions, 6,903 people had been rescued in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with nine medical camps set up for treatment. He noted that eight army units were deployed in the province, while two battalions were engaged in Buner. Army Aviation is also providing support for emergency rescue and supply missions.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar said that the Prime Minister had ordered immediate relief measures, with 25,000 people relocated to safer areas through joint efforts of the NDMA, Army, and provincial governments.
NDMA Chairman Lt Gen Inam Haider revealed that 670 people had died and over 1,000 were injured in floods, rains, and landslides. He said that contingency plans were in place as new heavy rain spells were predicted until August 23.
The Prime Minister’s relief package, including food and medicines, is being distributed in five districts. Since August 17, more than 25,000 flood victims have been rescued and treated.
