Pakistan joins Ethiopia’s 700 million tree campaign in global push for climate action
In a powerful display of international environmental solidarity, Pakistan has officially joined Ethiopia’s historic “Renewal Through Planting” campaign, which aims to plant 700 million seedlings in a single day.
The initiative, launched under Ethiopia’s acclaimed Green Legacy Initiative by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, seeks to restore ecosystems, reduce carbon emissions, and ensure food and climate security.
To mark Pakistan’s participation, the Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad hosted a joint plantation drive and media briefing, drawing wide representation from the diplomatic community, government officials, business leaders, youth, religious scholars, civil society, and media.
Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environmental Coordination, Dr. Musadik Malik, was the chief guest at the event, while Additional Secretary (Africa) of Pakistan’s Foreign Office, Hamid Asghar Khan, attended as guest of honor.
In his address, Ambassador Dr. Jemal Beker, Ethiopia’s top envoy in Pakistan, emphasized the global impact of the Green Legacy Initiative, launched in 2019. He noted that the campaign promotes sustainable development, combats deforestation and erosion, and contributes to long-term climate resilience.
The Ambassador lauded Pakistan’s alignment with Ethiopia’s climate vision, calling it a message of global unity against climate change. He also announced that a high-level Ethiopian delegation will soon visit Pakistan to take part in “Green Dialogues” and tree plantation campaigns across the country.
In his speech, Minister Musadik Malik praised Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership, calling his climate vision a global model. He also recognized Ethiopia’s complementary efforts like Yelemat Tirufat (Bounty of Basket) as innovative responses to environmental and economic challenges.
Dr. Malik commended Ambassador Beker’s tireless efforts in promoting green values in Pakistan, stressing the importance of cross-border cooperation in tackling climate change.
