Islamabad — In a major step towards protecting journalists, the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) has launched the Journalist Alert mobile app. The app aims to provide immediate assistance to journalists facing threats, attacks, or emergencies while performing their duties.
Through the app, any registered journalist can press a panic button to instantly share their location and details of the situation with fellow journalists and relevant authorities. The initiative is designed to improve response times and ensure better safety measures for media workers across the country.
Speaking at the launch event held at the National Press Club, PFUJ Secretary General Arshad Ansari said, “The Journalist Alert app will serve as an essential lifeline for journalists. Media houses are facing unprecedented challenges, and this tool will help ensure our community’s safety.” He further emphasized that stronger legal action against crimes targeting journalists is crucial for long-term change.
Developed in collaboration with the Parliamentary Commission for Human Rights and Media Matters for Democracy, the app allows journalists to report incidents like abduction, assault, harassment, or surveillance with just one click.
RIUJ President Tariq Warak noted that the app would also help in documenting crimes against journalists nationwide, enhancing advocacy and protection efforts. National Press Club President Azhar Jatoi reiterated the club’s commitment to supporting press freedom and journalist safety.
Initially available in Urdu and English starting May 3, the app will later support Sindhi and Pashto languages. Media Matters for Democracy founder Asad Baig highlighted that the app’s dashboard will maintain comprehensive records of incidents, aiding efforts to bring perpetrators to justice.
Officials hailed the launch as a milestone moment in Pakistan’s media landscape, ushering in a new era for journalists’ safety and freedom.
