Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad celebrates 20th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day

The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) in Islamabad marked the 20th Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day on December 5, 2025, with a vibrant ceremony attended by members of the Ethiopian community in Pakistan, media representatives, tour operators, and friends of Ethiopia.

The event was held at the Ethiopian Embassy with national spirit and cultural enthusiasm under this year’s theme, “Democratic Consensus for Multinational Unity.” H.E. Farah Naz Akbar, Parliamentary Secretary for Pakistan’s Ministries of National Heritage & Culture, and Education & Professional Training, attended the ceremony as the chief guest.

Addressing the gathering, Mr. Chalachew Eshetie, Chargé d’Affaires (a.i.) of Ethiopia, explained the historical significance of Nations, Nationalities and Peoples’ Day, observed annually on December 8. He noted that the day commemorates the ratification of Ethiopia’s Constitution in 1994, which guarantees equal rights, recognition, and dignity to all nationalities and cultures within the country.

Highlighting Ethiopia’s recent progress, Mr. Eshetie referred to major national milestones, including the completion and inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), expansion of infrastructure, wide-ranging reforms, and signs of economic recovery under the leadership of Prime Minister H.E. Dr. Abiy Ahmed Ali.

Speaking on the occasion, the Pakistani parliamentary secretary conveyed warm greetings to the government and people of Ethiopia on behalf of the Government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. She emphasized shared values between Pakistan and Ethiopia, including cultural diversity, social norms, and a youthful population.

She also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Ethiopia under the “Look Africa” and “Engage Africa” policies, while appreciating the economic turnaround achieved by Ethiopia in recent years under Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s leadership.

The event concluded with renewed expressions of friendship and cooperation, reflecting Ethiopia’s commitment to unity in diversity and stronger ties with Pakistan.
