Explained: Why Pakistan is celebrating its 79th, not 78th, Independence Day in 2025

ISLAMABAD – Pakistanis across the country are celebrating Independence Day with passion, pride, and the green flag flying high in every corner — from busy city streets to remote mountain villages. Ceremonies, patriotic songs, and tributes to the armed forces, especially for their recent success in Operation Bunyanum Marsoos, have marked the day.

But one question resurfaces every year: is this the 78th or 79th Independence Day? The answer lies in how you count it.

The simplest rule: Count 14 August 1947 as Pakistan’s first Independence Day. Following that sequence, 14 August 2025 becomes the 79th Independence Day.

Here’s how the count looks:

  • 1947 → 1st Independence Day

  • 1948 → 2nd Independence Day

  • 1949 → 3rd Independence Day

  • 2022 → 76th

  • 2023 → 77th

  • 2024 → 78th

  • 2025 → 79th

Another quick method is simple subtraction:
Current year – 1947 = anniversary year
Example: 2025 – 1947 = 78 → 78th anniversary of independence.

If you want the Independence Day number, add one to that result:
2025 – 1947 + 1 = 79 → 79th Independence Day.

So today, Pakistan celebrates its 79th Independence Day, honouring the nation’s creation in 1947 while reflecting on 78 years of resilience, unity, and progress.
