ISLAMABAD – The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has placed the country on high alert ahead of a powerful monsoon system forecast to sweep across Pakistan from August 14 to 22, with warnings of intense rainfall, flash floods, and landslides.
From August 18 to 21, heavy to very heavy rain is expected in Punjab, Islamabad, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Sindh and Balochistan will also experience rain, with isolated heavy showers likely during the same period. The new advisory extends and intensifies the PMD’s earlier forecast of August 13–15 rainfall.

The department cautioned about flash floods in hilly streams, urban flooding in major cities, and potential landslides in mountainous terrain. River inflows are set to rise, particularly in the Sutlej, Ravi, and Chenab. The Sutlej at Ganda Singh Wala is expected to remain at low flood levels in the next three days, but flows could increase due to heavy rain and water releases from India.
Medium to high flood levels are likely in the Chenab at Khanki and Qadirabad and in the tributary nullahs of the Ravi. The Indus at Taunsa may also experience a rise in water levels within the next 24 hours.
Reservoir status:
As of August 12, Tarbela’s level rose by 0.5 feet to 1,546.50 feet, just 3.5 feet below capacity. Mangla gained 0.3 feet to 1,206.50 feet, Khanpur increased 0.5 feet to 1,975.20 feet, while Simly remained steady at 2,284.85 feet. Rawal Dam dropped by 1.8 feet to 1,749.40 feet, close to its maximum of 1,752 feet.
The PMD has urged provincial authorities to prepare emergency plans, and residents in vulnerable zones have been advised to stay vigilant and follow official advisories during the active monsoon spell.
