February 8 is a public holiday in Pakistan

In a significant effort to enhance democratic engagement, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has officially announced the declaration of a public holiday on February 8, coinciding with the scheduled general elections in the country. This decision, made within the authority granted to the ECP by Article 218 of the Constitution, is intended to facilitate and promote voters’ exercise of their franchise rights without any impediments.

As per a notification issued by the Election Commission of Pakistan, “Exercising powers conferred under Article 218 of the Constitution, in conjunction with Section (4) and 8(c) of the Elections Act, 2017 (Act No. XXXIII of 2017), and all other relevant powers, the Election Commission of Pakistan is pleased to declare a public holiday on 8th February 2024 in the country, allowing voters to freely and conveniently exercise their right to franchise.”

This strategic decision aligns with the democratic principles of the nation, emphasizing the significance of the participation of every eligible voter in shaping the country’s future. By designating February 8 as a public holiday, the Election Commission aims to remove potential obstacles that may discourage individuals from participating in the electoral process.
